On the Chamberlain family (LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Craftsman, Raynor), the color of the LEARN button on the back of the motor head encodes the radio frequency and code generation. That's what decides whether a given remote or keypad will program. Match the color, and you match the remote.

Black learn button? It's a different system
Genie and Overhead Door (Intellicode), Linear (MegaCode), and Stanley all use a black learn button, so the color tells you nothing. On those you match the remote to the brand and frequency instead. The checker above handles that automatically once you pick the brand.
When the button is faded: the universal fallback
A universal trainable remote (374UT/375UT) or a MAX / L-…U remote programs to ANY Chamberlain learn-button color: green, orange/red, purple, yellow, or white. Universal keypad: 877MAX or L979U. These are the safe pick when the learn button is faded/painted or the model is unknown.

How do I know which garage door remote is compatible?
On a LiftMaster or Chamberlain, find the LEARN button (near the antenna wire or under the light lens) and read its color. The color sets the radio frequency and code generation, which determines which remotes and keypads will program. Pick your color above for the exact list.
What does the purple learn button mean?
A purple (or brown) LEARN button is Security+ at 315 MHz, used roughly 2005–2014. Compatible remotes include the 371LM/373LM/375LM family and the 877LM keypad, or any universal/MAX remote. A 390 MHz green/orange remote will not work.
My learn button is black. What brand is it?
A black learn button usually means Genie/Overhead Door (Intellicode), Linear (MegaCode), or Stanley, not a Chamberlain color code. On those, color is not diagnostic; you match the remote by brand and frequency instead.
What if the learn button is faded or painted over?
