Standard, high-lift, and vertical lift
- Standard lift: the track turns horizontal ~12" above the opening and the door parks under the ceiling. Needs the most backroom.
- High-lift: a taller vertical track raises the door a set distance (24–60"+) before turning horizontal, which gains clearance for tall vehicles or lifts while keeping some horizontal track.
- Full vertical lift: the door runs straight up the wall the entire opening height. Needs the most headroom, almost no backroom; common on tall industrial and rail-side buildings.
The headroom math
Standard track eats about 12" of headroom to make the turn (the spring line). Everything above that can become high-lift:
Max high-lift = available headroom − 12".
For full vertical lift, you need enough headroom to raise the door its entire height plus the spring line: about door height + 12" above the opening. High-lift also needs a cable drum sized for the rise (and often a different spring), so the drum, not just the ceiling, sets the real limit.

High-lift raises the door straight up for a set distance before the track turns back to horizontal, gaining overhead clearance for tall vehicles, lifts, or ceiling storage. It uses a taller vertical track and a cable drum sized for the extra rise.
How much headroom do I need for vertical lift?
Full vertical lift, where the door travels straight up the full opening height, needs headroom of about the door height plus ~12 inches above the opening. An 8-ft door needs roughly 9 feet of headroom above the opening (a ~17-ft ceiling).
What is the difference between high-lift and full vertical lift?
